Symphony is a multi-movement instrumental work for an orchestra originating from the Italian Sinfonia, which was an instrumental prelude to large-scale vocal works such as opera and oratorio. Sinfonia comprises of 3 movements written at the tempo sequence of fast- slow fast. According to Dr. Nolan Gasser, the new trend of adopting opera sinfonia for concert use emerged in the 1720s and 30s and soon, composers such as Giovanni Battista Sammartini and Johann Stamitz began composing symphonies as an independent work. Three symphonies from Johann Stamitz, Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven will be used in this paper to compare four elements –movement structure, length of the first movement, instrumentation and the compositional techniques used…
How the melody began of the symphony "the Spoonie Life" is unique to each of us. However, like a ton of bricks, the news crushed us emotionally, which no preparation could brace us for the sudden shift in song. Lumped into a group of over 125 million American's who are in daily combat with their bodies due to chronic illness. After all, these are Invisible Illnesses. Adjusting to the new role.…
Through many examples of music from many different backgrounds, I have come to realize and appreciate the diversity present in the world of music. When I was asked to select one piece of music to analyze, I was faced with a difficult decision. It was challenging for me to decide on one piece of music that I could analyze given the abundance of music. After many countless hours of searching for one piece of music that I could focus my time on to analyze, I selected a piece named October by Eric Whitacre. Eric Whitacre is a Grammy-winning American composer and conductor.…
Shostakovich was composing his seventh symphony during World War II. He remained in Leningrad even when conflicts between the Soviet Union and Germany increased due to the German invasion of Russia. Shostakovich’s bad vision kept him from joining the army. Instead, he was a volunteer firefighter for the Leningrad Conservatory. Although Shostakovich was not able to help fight in the war, his greatest influence on World War II was his seventh symphony.…

If you answered “no”, then you need to get out more. Today, I am here to discuss music for the eighty-three billionth time. So let’s get on with it.…
In an effort to reach a larger audience, the Toronto symphony sets out to create a visual experience to accompany their scores. These infographics use symbols and color to make it accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. These simplified systems were created with accessibility in mind; however in this instance a higher level of accessibility could be achieved. The article states that these diagrams are popular amongst younger generations, and I believe that it could be even more popularized if other accessibility factors would have been considered. For example the size of the text in certain parts is quite small which would be difficult to read for those with glasses or poor sight.…
As I step outside the door and plug in my earphones my thumbs automatically scroll through my playlist in search of the theme song to the latest musical, the Greatest Showman. The beats kick in, my steps quickly match, and I’m off to start my day feeling cheerful and prepared. Its songs are full of power and determination. For instance, the song “This Is Me” has lyrics “ And I’m marching on to the beat I drum, I’m not scared to be seen, I make no apologies, this is me”.…
On Friday, October 9, 2015, the Moore’s Opera House presented a performance by the Wind Ensemble. The Wind Ensemble consisted of many wind instruments as well as six percussion players. I learned the need to work well in advance of the deadline. Musical details may be different than academic details, but just as slight differences in tone and pitch can completely change the music’s meaning, every detail, regardless of how small, matters in all subjects. Whether it’s a math problem or a novel, my heightened attention to detail helps me to better identify the correct steps or the overall theme. As high-school progressed it became more and more evident that relying on natural abilities doesn’t equate to achieving…

As soon as my sneakers hit the grimy sidewalk outside the concert hall, I could tell something was amiss. There was no squealing of brakes from the mid-day traffic, or any jogger along the sidewalk. As I continued down the block, I did not hear the resonance of pubescent chatter from the playground down the street, nor the squabble of vendors. All around me was utter silence. Remember when your parents would proclaim, “Silence is golden.” ?…
The concert started with spring, which represents a new beginning much like being born. The playfulness of the melodies exuded a sense of innocence. The transition into summer represented the responsibilities assumed when becoming an adult. The fruits of the labor invested in life can be harvested in autumn. Finally, the cold of winter takes over representing death.…
Now nothing could remain as it once had been. The sound of fast piano arpeggios and chords, and a wistful prelude subtly fills the empty room, reverb evident as the sound waves reflect on its walls. A combination of instruments become one and create a melody so unique, even those who’ve dedicated their whole lives to the art of music cannot decipher its quality. The tones of each note, all dynamically coloured and bright move in inhuman synchronicity.…
