Personality is who we are as people. Our personalities determine how we act, react and how we interact with and/or respond to the world. What is personality? A set of stable characteristics is our personality, which is a set of traits that begins with genetic plans and is completed as those plans are expressed by physical growth in the brain as it develops in response to the demands of the environment. This brain growth is carried out in a series steps called cognitive stages, which allow the child time to work through stages of emotional development and learn sets of beliefs, emotions, and actions to meet a succession of progressively more complex needs. The four stages of cognitive development are sensorimotor, …show more content…
Piaget’s theory of cognitive development is a comprehensive theory about the nature and development of human intelligence. Piaget believe that one’s childhood plays a vital and active role in a person’s development. Piaget’s idea is primarily known as a developmental stage theory. The theory deals with the nature of knowledge itself and how humans gradually come to acquire, construct and use it. Piaget felt the cognitive development was a progressive reorganization of mental processes resulting from biological maturation and environmental experience. Through a series of stages, Piaget proposed four stages of cognitive development, the Sensorimotor, Symbolic Functions, Concrete Functions and Formal Operations. The Sensorimotor stage is the first of the four stages in cognitive development which “extends from birth to the acquisition of language”. (0-2 years old) During this stage the infant learns the concept of object permanence or that things and people continue to exist even when they are out of sight. The Pre-operational stage is the second stage; in this stage the child begins to learn to speak. (2-7 years old) During this stage the child uses intuition rather than reasoning and logic. The Concrete operational stage is the third stage of Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. (7-11 years old) During this stage the child learns the concept of conservation, or that mass, weight, and volume don’t change when the shape changes. The final stage is known as The Formal operational stage. (12 to Adult) During this stage the individual begins to deal with complex abstract topic like democracy or
