Communication and education, being the most influential, should be the primary focus for the nurse. Communication between the nurse and patient needs to be open and sensitive to the social, cultural or financial nuances particular to their patient at that time. Education between the patient and nurse needs to be consistent and informative; through training or by building off whatever knowledge the patient currently has (Wilkinson, 2012). Because the number of hospital admissions for individuals with diabetes is expected to grow over the course of years, it will be important for nurses to be knowledgeable about diabetes self-management and patient education.
