Johnny is a law-abiding citizen, while on the other hand, Dally cannot do things the legal way. Johnny clearly never wants to get in trouble, as the only time ever seems to get into trouble in the story is when he accidentally kills Bob. The whole gang knows that Johnny is the person who gets into mischief the least. Ponyboy even says, “And Johnny, who was the most law-abiding of us” (34). Clearly, everybody knows that Johnny does not like to cause trouble and follows the law the most. In a different manner, Dally certainly cannot follow the law. Everywhere he goes, he has to do something illegal. Dally has done almost everything a person could get arrested for. Pony even states, “They have a file of him down at the police station. He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids-he did everything” (11). Obviously, Dally cannot follow the rules.
