James C. Snyder, the author of “Introduction to Architecture”, once said: “Forests were the first temples of God and in forests men grasped their first idea of architecture.” Through centuries, architecture, especially in house design, has rapidly developed and thrived in many countries. Depending on the culture and customs, house design is mostly changed to fit the circumstance of different nations. Therefore, it is obviously created huge dissimilarities between Eastern and Western architecture, specifically between Vietnamese’s and American’s house design. Although they may share some common features, they still own many differences in indoor, outdoor structure as well as ornamentation.
As Vietnam is a small, developing country, the size of the usual house is also small, approximately about two third of the normal American’s. Through history, under the rule of Chinese Emperor for a thousand year, Vietnamese’s house design was strongly affected by the Chinese’s and mostly based on the Geomancy Theory, the art of interpreting the influences of wind, air and water into the happiness and wealth in the life of human being. It is definitely hard to walk through the living room without lingering by a window and being fascinated by the peaceful scenery of the yard. A wide path is filled with flagstone as well as interplanted with dymondia margaratae, and tiny yellow sedums. Standing out from the garden, a set of glossy silver outdoor table is placed in the center of the garden, next to a hanging – rocking chair. Red lilies, purple lavender, and white daffodils surround the outer edge of the yard, evoking a casual and placid atmosphere. A hammock, hanging in the corner, is another great way to say: “This garden is only for
