I think my students lack the confidence to learn more complex words and apply the words when they are engaging in literacy activities. I wanted my students to have…

Teacher Explanation: The teacher will first write down the words that are considered “vocabulary” words that are difficult to pronounce or understand. She will explain to the student the meaning of the words and how the words should be correctly pronounced…
For strategy section V, I selected the strategy microelection because I believed this would best benefit Sophia because it is helpful when students are required to read long texts that contain significant amount of new information. Since Sophia is so advanced in the EL program, I believed that choosing strategies such as microelection would best benefit her in the classroom. This strategy highlights the ability to find key words in individual sentences, which students need to have when finding the main idea in a longer reading passage. 3. Before implementing this strategy into my lesson, I would explain the importance of understanding the meanings of significant words in a sentence in order to understand the sentence as a whole.…
Perhaps I am breaking the rules of this forum, by sharing a story which is not technically a first hand account of my own direct experiences. One thing I am certain of is that I am breaking the laws of doctor/patient confidentiality by sharing this secondary story at all-- which was relayed to me personally in an interview situation with one of my patients. My name is Doctor Simon Kearns. I am a doctor of psychology at Bourkeley institution for mental health in Hexton, Australia.…
A few years ago I was asked by my department chair to teach an English Language Development (ELD) class. As I had only been teaching for a year, I was unfamiliar with the full requirements of the class and nervous to take on what I felt was a BIG responsibility. Once I accepted our dean of curriculum asked me to be the ELD advisor. I took two days to decide that with my family background, my grandfather picked fruit for a living and my mom picked and packed growing up, I could make the students understand that working hard in school and continuing their education post high school could help them get more out of life than merely staying at a menial job. My first year was difficult.…
When students can relate and visualize what is happening in the class or in the text they are reading, they are more likely to be engaged and understand the material. The teacher candidate believes that Mr. Smith should have taught a few of these words prior to the students reading the book. “Some teachable words are introduced before the first read-aloud. These are words whose meaning are crucial to the overall understanding of the story” (Honig, 2013 p.…

Telling them to circle or underline any unfamiliar word. The instructor asks also about taking notes during the reading process. In the last stage, after reading, the instructor tells the students to write a list of all new vocabularies. Additionally, asking if there is any vague or difficult word hindering the understanding. Moreover, students also can sort out words in to two groups; thing and people, for instance thing: single room, people: guest.…
1. Using the term “diversity” as defined and described in class discussions and readings (racial, ethnicity, linguistic, social-economics, disabilities, etc.) identify and explain, using the field experience class demographics, how your class setting was diverse. While walking through Forest Hills Elementary, seeing the principal, vice principal, administration, staff, teachers and students are racial and ethnically diverse. The principal and vice principal were very passionate about their students and wanting them to excel.…
1. This project was a great experience for Cinthya and I. We got to go to her field placement and do our own lesson about discrimination and prejudice in school. It was very eye opening to see how students mostly anglo students knew so much about discrimination and what is wrong and right. They were very respectful and knew that discrimination should not be tolerated any where because everyone should be treated with respect.…
Along with textbooks, using other literature can help support their learning. Using additional literature will increase their knowledge on the topic and the vocabulary being…
The students will benefit from this more than simply being given the solution. Rather than showing the students a movie that relates to a book they read the students can perform a reader’s theater. Instead of discussing chemical reactions a simple experiment that the students can complete can help them better grasp what occurs in a reaction. I believe that the best way to help the students connect to the content is to make the connections personal. Interest surveys conducted at the beginning of the year can help teachers find ideas for ways to connect different content areas.…
Preparing for the Immersion Experience From the information given by my Indian friend (the interviewee for a diversity interview assignment), I learned that there are several traditions in Indian culture that happen in every month. In the end of this October, the Indian community has a festival called Diwali. I asked him in the first place, whether he celebrate the event or not, and I also asked him for other possible activities that I could participate in a cultural experience. Fortunately, he agreed that I could join him for Diwali.…
