Discoveries made in that period changed the world. And the use of the scientific method reformed the scientific beliefs of most people. Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish astronomer, discovered the heliocentric theory that stated that the Earth revolves around the sun, which falsified the geocentric theory that stated that the Earth was the center of the universe and the moon, planets and the sun revolved around it. The church rejected all the great discoveries that changed the people’s beliefs in that time. The Catholic Church had its own scientific beliefs, so conflicts between the church and science developed because it believed that reason was the enemy of faith. In the 1700s, Enlightenment ideas spread causing change in governments and society. Enlightenment thinkers began applying reason to make human conditions better. By examining the organization of governments, thinkers began developing new ideas such as social contracts between society and government and dividing power between the governments’ branches, which changed the structures of many governments. Several factors led the people to switch from muscles to machines. Some of these factors were political, such as exploration and colonialism, sea power, political stability, government support and growth of private investment. And others were agricultural, like the enclosure movement. Weaving used to be a cottage industry, people used to make clothes at home and sell them. However, as machines became more common, people wanted to use them but they couldn’t fit them in their houses so they started weaving clothes at factories. Cottage industries had other disadvantages as well, natural disasters could destroy a family’s future, it required skills, and physical strength and had other difficulties. People left their homes and families to work in factories to provide enough money to survive. As industrialization spread, society was reformed. The middle class started growing more and more. The middle class included many people, such as managers, accountants, engineers and other workers. This revolution also caused the development of mass production, where huge numbers of identical products were manufactured. Mass production made factories charge less money per item, because of dramatic increase in production.
