As the clinical educator for surgical services; I definitely incorporate two major theories in my daily practice. The first one is Benner’s Novice to Expert; this theory plays a huge role in competency based education and validation of the orientees skill level by an assigned group of preceptors. Our goal in competency based education is to immerse the orientee in perioperative nursing practice; allowing the orientee to move from detached observer to someone who is fully engaged and a functioning, proficient team member (Blais&Hayes, 2016).
