Introduction: Pollination is the process by which pollen, is transported to the reproductive organs of female seed plants. Pollen is a fine, grainy substance, which are the gametophytes of male seed plants, and produce sperm cells. Pollination is what allows most plants to fertilize one another and reproduce. Pollination is important because many plants that humans consume, reproduce through pollination. Some examples of plants that reproduce through pollination that humans consume are almonds and blueberries. Pollination needs a vector in order to happen, and many times this vector is an insect, such as a bee. The bee will move flower …show more content…
The plant that was being studied in this experiment is the bougainvillea. The bougainvillea is a plant that has bright colored petals, with a high toleration towards salt content, and is ideal for coastal areas, (Nores et al., 2013). The primary pollinator of bougainvilleas is the bee, but other weather factors such as wind can affect pollination in bougainvilleas. The hypothesis of this experiment is that the weather in which a bougainvillea is, will affect how many pollinators the plant will encounter on a given day. The null hypothesis is that the weather has no effect on the amount of pollinators that visit the bougainvillea encounters. The reason these questions are important is because they could possibly provide insight into how to set up the environment in which a plant inhabits so they can be pollinated more effectively in order to obtain more …show more content…
There were specifically two bougainvilleas that were being observed on campus, and one was the bougainvillea that was located in the Hector P. Garcia courtyard, and the other was next to the engineering building. The observations were taken daily over approximately two weeks. Each observation was taken over 10 minutes, and while these 10 minutes elapsed, data such as the day the observation was conducted, the time of day, the amount of sunlight the plant was receiving, the type of pollinators that visited, the amounts of pollinators that visited, and the temperature were recorded. Materials that are needed for the conduction of this experiment are a notebook, writing utensil, a clock, and a temperature reading
