Introduction
According to PFMA’s pet population report, for 2017 it is estimated that 12million of UK households have pets with approximately 17% of this figure representing the cat population of the UK (Pet Food Manufacturers Association 2017). There are many recognised reasons for the popularity of cats as household pets in the UK; a source of company, companionship and more recently discovered a source of emotional support for humans seeking social interactions (Stammbach & Turner 1999).
