The article first explains that peaceful protest group was headed to the Winter Palace to plead the Czar to read their petition about poor working conditions and the economic slump due to the war with Japan. Unfortunately, the Czar was not present at the time that the protesters were at the Winter Palace, or else he could have stopped the chaos. Because the Czar was not there, the guards of the Winter Palace panicked. The guards then took it upon themselves to make the call the actions needed to be taken against the protesters. The protesters were gunned down and there was mass murder. The people blamed Czar Nicholas II even though there was nothing he could do to stop the killing. The source then goes on to explain that the people were full of unrest, which triggered a chain of unfortunate events. With the rise of industrialization, there was an economic stimulus. According to the article, “By the first years of the 20th century, Russia’s three million industrial workers were one of the lowest paid workforces in Europe (low wage costs in Russia were one of the lures that attracted foreign investment).” People did not receive sick days, days off, or moderate working conditions.
