This mandate was enacted in order to ensure that children with disabilities in any school-like setting are taught alongside students that are not disabled. If the child with a disability is deemed severe to the point that general education classrooms with supplementary aids does not allow the student to reach their full potential, then removal of the student to a special classroom or school is allowed. It is important for parents to be a part of their child’s educational journey. Therefore, by law, the parents are incorporated in the IEP creation and are able to access their child’s school records whenever they please (Kirk, Gallagher, and Coleman 35). In order for the parents to be properly prepared to work with professionals on the development of their child’s IEP, they should be given special training. This training should help the parent to improve their understanding of the necessities of their child’s disability as well as make them aware of ways that they can provide additional support to the child’s lesson plan. The training should also focus on helping the parents learn how to participate in the IEP planning as well as how they can attain information regarding services and programs offered for their child. In addition, this training should also help the parents comprehend the six key mandates in Public Law 94-142 (Payne par. 5).
