Kohlberg’s theory states that individuals may move up through six stages which are divided into three groups. He states that the knowledge gained during moral development is not lost and influences future choices. The first group is Pre-conventional Reasoning, which encompasses stage one and stage two, and tells that the individual will act to avoid punishment or gain a reward. The second group is Conventional Reasoning, which encompasses stage three and stage four, and tells that the individual’s expatiations of others or what is good for the society as a whole influence behavior. The third group is Post-conventional Reasoning, which encompasses stage five and stage six, and tells that the individual acts upon universal principles such as the principle that human life has value regardless of money. Moral development effects everyone’s daily lives because individuals must choose what is right and what is wrong every day.
