Sweatshops are factories that have horrible working conditions, very little pay, and long hours. In order to be considered a sweatshop, there must be some of the following things: long hours, no rest days or weekends, small minimum wage, no pay for working overtime, or hazardous conditions with limited safety equipment (D’Ambrogio). The majority of the sweatshops around the globe can be found within Asia (Unfair Practices 3). Asia is also home to 70% of Europe’s imports (D’Ambrogio). Recently, sweatshops have brought up many controversies involving popular shoe brands, Nike and Adidas (Unfair Practices 2). Both companies have been accused of not paying their factories workers in other countries. The factory was found in Indonesia and was the home to both controversies. The claim is that the owners of the factory did not pay over two thousand people totaling over three million dollars in 2011 (Finkelmeyer). However, there are organizations that are working to prevents these actions from happening. The World Fair Trade Organization, or WFTO, is one of those. The WFTO ensures that all people are given fair working conditions and wages (Unfair Practices 2). There are also people called “Watchdogs” who attempt to ensure that all workers are getting treated fairly. The effects of globalization on the textile industry are both positive and negative, but nonetheless, they are very visible to those who are involved. Jobs are being lost in developed countries, however there is a positive from the globalization. Entrepreneurs have been given more and better opportunities. It allows them to find the best area for the manufacturing and marketing across the globe (Mittelhauser). The textile industry is one that is very important to the entire global economy. Without the shift of jobs from the developed countries to the developing countries, those lesser countries might never have gotten enough revenue to survive. On the other hand, it did cause a decline in the more advanced countries. Even though the textile industry has gone through multiple changes over the past 20 years, the main mission still remains the same. Many business still stick to their roots and continue making products, while others use the technology advancements to their advantage.
