A child’s behavior is like an echo of the child’s environment. In looking at the parenting styles and family system, there is a correlation between a child’s development and their family system. As a result, parents do not express much affection for their children and are less responsive to their needs. Children raised in an uninvolved parenting style tend to exhibit a significant amount of internal and external problems. While parenting styles are a contributor to family systems, they are not the only contributing factor to a child’s behavior and development. Another aspect of parenting is the method of control how a parent chooses to use. Or how genetic influence plays into the parent-child relationship and/or child’s temperament. It’s important to look at external contributing factors of a family system as one looks at a child’s development. Many researchers agree the correlation between parenting-styles and a child’s development isn’t strong enough to explain everything and encourage a comprehensive approach. Traits of a healthy family system include commitment, time together, communication, appreciation, spirituality, and coping skills. Many times throughout family systems, these beliefs are practiced through prayer, meditation, worship and other expressions of faith. Healthy family systems also contribute to healthy social development in children as well. Family systems are a child’s first social setting. Children who are raised in a healthy family system are more incline to positively relate to others in social settings outside of the family.
Family systems are complex in their structure. They influence a child’s development physically, spiritually and emotionally. While there are different emphasizes in research on various aspects of a child’s development and how family systems influence children, it’s important to look at both the external influences and the internal influences of a child’s development. Parenting style, family systems and a child’s genetics all factor into a child’s development. (Segrin, 2013)
