The phase of emerging
The phase of emerging
In Scaccia’s article she list 5 milestones to be defined as an adult. “completing school, leaving home, becoming financially independent, marrying, and having a child”(Scaccia par. 1).Although the last two milestones isn’t for everyone to do you should still do the first three to become an adult. People who are at the age of 18 are less likely to make decision on their own without any parent aid. In Greenblatt’s article he shows us some scientific research about the brain and says “Using advanced brain-scanning technology, scientists are getting a better view of how the human brain develops than ever before.…
The article, “Race, Ethnicity, and Emerging Adulthood: Retrospect and Prospects”, by Moin Syed and Lauren L. Mitchell was conducted in 2013 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. The researchers state, “The purpose of this article is to fill this gap by conducting a conceptual review of the literature on race, ethnicity, and emerging adulthood. In addition, the purpose of this article is to provide a review of what is known, and what remains to be known, about the role of race and ethnicity for emerging adulthood” (Mitchell & Syed, 2013, p. 83). The intent of this study was to determine what considers an individual to be classified as emerging adulthood based on the contribution to the family and social class levels. Researchers defined the term emerging adulthood as a term “that applies to a developmental period of the life span, roughly of age 18-29” (Mitchell & Syed, 2013, p. 83).…
Identities developed during childhood can impact adulthood. Some people are consciously aware of their identities and some are not. The social messages that people receive can shape their identities both positively and negatively. Experiences also greatly affect identities. Two identities from my childhood that shaped my adulthood are being a military child and being a female.…
Another example, in Greenblatt’s article, he states “Using advanced brain-scanning technology, scientists are getting a better view on how the human brain develops than ever before. And what they’ve found is that in most people, the prefrontal cortex and its links to other regions of the brain are not fully formed until age 25-- much later than anyone had realized”(5 page 1) So how are 18 year old adults supposed to make big life decisions about school or work or relationships, if their brain isn’t even fully…
The teen brain still needs to develop and mature even at the age of 18. “The frontal section of the brain, which helps people plan and make decisions, continues developing until people reach their early 20s”(Kennedy 1).The rational part of the brain doesn’t fully reach its peak until around the age of 25. In Jon Hamilton’s “Teenage brains are malleable and vulnerable, researchers say”, Jay Giedd states, “rapid changes in the brains of teenagers make these years a time of enormous opportunity”(Hamilton 2). The statement is referring to the idea that during teen years, teens are very sensitive and prone to large changes in the brain’s functionality. Whilst many adults have already passed this stage, therefore they aren’t as easily vulnerable.…
After reading many different perspectives on this issue, I believe that becoming an adult cannot be determined by just one thing. It's a combination of brain maturity, social maturity, and independence. Different parts of the brain mature at different times, but all parts are needed to scientifically become an adult. “There…
Pressures of Approaching Adulthood Pressure is a cruel feeling that is abundant throughout all humans, and is especially common in college students. These students experience high amounts of pressure since they’re at the point in their lives where their development ceases. These concluding steps of human development are more commonly known as the state of Emerging Adulthood. Emerging Adulthood is a very hypersensitive period, between the ages of 18 and 25, where young adults start to become adults, and define who they are and what their values are. Consequently, pressure disrupts the Emerging Adulthood process and causes catastrophic infliction on the development pattern for young adults.…
1) When it comes to the adolescent brain and the adult brain, the big difference between the two is that the adult brain is fully developed while the adolescent brain is still in the process of synaptic pruning. Synaptic pruning is a process that involves the removal of certain connections between neurons, which allows the brain to function to efficiently. This pruning process is something that we experience until our brain reaches adulthood when we are in our mid-twenties. During adolescence the area of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex experiences a lot of pruning. This means that adolescents are getting better at thinking ahead, planning, impulse control, and weighing risks and rewards (Steinberg, 2014, p.67).…
Teen Brain Essay Being an adult, depends on how developed/mature ones brain is. Scientist have studied and confirmed that a brain is not fully grown until the age of 25. Thus, being because a young brain contains a lot of gray matter. During our adolescence years, our brain still undergoes “radical” changes and the teen brain matures in different parts of the cortex at different rates.…
Emerging Adulthood is an ambiguous period in a person’s life. It is a period that most people do not know who they are as a person or know what to expect next. Throughout the first week of class we learned where the term emerging adults came from and how it became such a phenomenon in the field of Psychology. Arnett (2014) defines emerging adulthood as an age of identity exploration, instability, self-focus, feeling of in-between, and possibilities; which he called the key features of emerging adulthood. After learning about the five key features in emerging adults, there were three that stood out to be me; the age of identity exploration, instability and self-focus.…
MIT Young Adult Development Project found that brain development can go well into the mid 20’s. In other words, just because someone is in their 20’s or even 30’s does not mean they are mature. Many people at that age have a lot of growing up to…
Millenials, Americans born from 1981 to 1997, are being attack for being lazy and entitled, and abandoning the American dream. Millenials this year will eclipse in size the previous Gen X and baby boomer generations and by 2020 will comprise half of the U.S. workforce (Grisales, 2015). There is a ton of research on the millenial generation of about 75.3 million Americans. Millenials are approaching the workplace differently than any other generation, thus giving us a different outlook on the American Dream. The American Dream has been part of our culture since the 1930s, with hopes of home ownership, a good job, and retirement security.…
According to Invitation to the Lifespan, Beth, the first women I interviewed, is in the Emerging Adulthood stage of life. Emerging adulthood is the period of life between 18 and 25 and is considered the transitioning phase from adolescence to adulthood. (Berger, 2016) Beth is an 18-year-old female and the older of two children. She is currently in her freshman year at a University in California.…
The Development of Identity and Self-Concept When individuals look into a mirror, there is much more looking back besides just physical characteristics. As complex organisms, with high levels of thinking, feeling, and social functioning, humans have both unique, inherent traits, as well as unique life experiences. Both of these areas mold together into the development of one’s identity and self-concept. At no other time is the formulations of identity and self-concept more important than during the integral years from middle-childhood through early adolescence.…
The young adult’s developmental pathway is a stage of life that includes the challenges of independence, the reward for achievement, and the endurance of crises (Nagy, 2013, p. 422.) This essay will describe and discuss the physical, cognitive and psychosocial characteristics of the young adulthood lifespan stage. Two theorists that relate their developmental research to this life span, Erikson and Piaget, are described and the discussion of two health related behaviours applicable to the young adult. In young adulthood, physical development and abilities are at their peak between the ages of 20-30 years.…
