McMurphy did not necessarily benefit from the treatment, but research has shown that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can benefit some people with mental disorders, especially those suffering from depression (Prudic, Olfson, Marcus, Fuller, & Sackeim, 2004). In a study by Prudic et al. (2004), researchers aimed to find the effectiveness of ECT in community based settings. For the study, 349 participants were recruited who had been diagnosed with a depressive disorder. The participants were analyzed immediately after ECT, and then also throughout a 24 week follow-up period on their remission and relapse of depression. It was found that the average remission rates for these patients was between 30.3-46.7%, contrasting the expected 70-90% (Prudic et al., 2004). For the participants who had experienced a remission of their depression symptoms, 64.3% relapsed back to their original state that they were in prior to the ECT. The researchers also found that relapse rates were higher for participants who had comorbid axis I or axis II disorders.
