The first regions inhabited by the newcomers from England were the Chesapeake area, New England, and Pennsylvania. The Chesapeake area was composed of Virginia and Maryland and inhabited Powhatan Indians as well as the new colonists. On the other hand, New England composed of Maine to Long Island, and had a severe climate that composed of a rockbound coast. In the North, women were valued, as they played a vital role in the family by keeping vegetable gardens and taking care of the kitchen. Religiously, puritanism was the primary religion of the area, as they established communities of pure Christians and it was agreed to punish civil and religious transgressors. In contrast to the Chesapeake area, New England was led by more experienced men, and artisans and farmers worked together as a tight knit community rather than like in the Chesapeake where there was exploitation of labor. New Englanders relied mostly on free labor economy which was based on agriculture, fishing, timberling, and trading for beaver furs with local indians. In addition, coerced labor did not exist like in the Chesapeake because there were no crops,rather, slaves worked as artisans and domestic servants. Pennsylvania was the most different from both the Chesapeake and New England area because it had a liberal government and they acknowledged that the Native Americans should have the right to maintain their land.
