Relationships connect people in many ways. Madame Loisel and Della both have loving husbands who sacrifice many things for them. Della’s husband Jim sold his beloved great grandfathers watch to buy Della a gift. “I sold the watch to get money to buy your combs” (O Henry 102) Jim got this perfect gift because her hair is so beautiful and long. She wishes for more but can not afford it. Della and her husband also struggle with money as they struggle to buy gifts for Christmas. On the day before Christmas Della only had $1.87 to purchase a gift. On the other side of their background, Della works for a change and Madame Loisel waits for things to be handed to her. Madame Loisel has reasons to believe that her life is inadequate. In result she turns to people for help. For example, her husband saved money to go hunting and gave it up to buy a dress.
