The characters differ from the book to the movie. In the movie, it showed that Nick wrote the novel while in an institution, something like a hospital, and had describing to the doctor all the things that happened that summer; devastating parts of it. When he met Myrtle Wilson, he described her as a bigger woman. In the case of the movie, she had an average build, just as everyone else and very energetic. Tom Buchanan, …show more content…
For example, a famous female golfer named Jordan Baker, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki, described as,”...a slender, small-breasted girl, with an erect carriage, which she accentuated by throwing her body backward at the shoulder like a young cadet. Her gray sun-stained eyes…” (11; ch. 1) Debicki’s blue-gray eyes and her small, thin body type fit Ms. Baker’s description from the novel. Joel Edgerton acts as Tom Buchanan and also fits the bill of the book character quite nicely. His broad shoulders, intense muscle definition and size represent Mr. Buchanan’s description of,”...you could see a great pack of muscle shifting when his shoulder moved under his thin coat,” very well. “His speaking voice, gruff husky tenor…” (7; ch. 1) and “...his broad, flat hand…” (116; ch. 7) represent Edgerton’s and his character, Mr. Buchanan’s, appearance in addition to the first excerpt. Finally, Carey Mulligan and Charlize Skinner act the parts of Daisy and Pammy Buchanan. Both actors, again, seemingly pulled from Fitzgerald’s imagination. Daisy and Pammy possess yellow hair in the book,”Did your mother get powder on your old yellowy hair?” (117; ch. 7) Pammy’s nurse questioned her in the novel. The two look related as well, remarkably so, with their slender faces, lovely brown eyes, and yellow hair. In the book Fitzgerald described Pammy through Daisy saying,”She’s got my hair and shape of my face,” (117; ch. 7) when telling Nick, Gatsby, and Jordan why Pammy looks more like her than Tom. Luhrmann and his casting team portrayed Fitzgerald’s characters in both personality and appearance with uncanny resemblance to the novel’s
