The novel “Holes” by Louis Sachar is an adventure and mystery narrative that describes the adventures of Stanley Yelnats at Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a correctional facility for young boys, and that is where Stanley resides during the novel. It takes place in Green Lake, Texas, during the blistering summer. The leading character of this story is 14-year-old Stanley Yelnats. Stanley is a nice and well-behaved young man. Despite being a large boy, he’s not as tough as people would think. He did not expect for it to be the kind of camp that it is, and is surprised upon arrival. He meets his campmates, who each go by the nicknames of X-ray, Magnet, Armpit, Zigzag, and Zero. He soon starts fitting right in, and is given the name Caveman. The task at Camp Green Lake is to dig one 5 foot hole per day, every day. During one of these diggings, Stanley comes across a gold tube with the initial KB on it, which is revealed to have belonged to the late famous outlaw Kissin’ Kate Barlow. It is believed that the author does this to help the reader understand why things are the way they are now, and why the present characters act the way they do. He also does this to show the long drawn-out history between the characters and their ancestors. Fate is a topic that is often talked about in the novel. The reader believes that the author made it a major point to emphasize the role that fate plays in the story. The way that Stanley and Zero found each other after the long history between their families could only be due to fate. It is believed that the author also gives off a message about the importance of perseverance. When Zero and Stanley were stranded out in the middle of nowhere, they did not give up and lay there to die. They had a goal in mind, and stuck with it no matter the circumstances. Their determination rewarded them in the end, and that is something that the author probably wanted the reader to take into
