In southeastern United States, Mississippi has the highest mortality rate due to strokes. Strokes are much more common among older people than younger adults, usually because the disorders that lead to strokes progress over time. Over two thirds of all strokes occur in people older than 65. Slightly more than 50% of all strokes occur in men, but more than 60% of deaths due to stroke occur in women, possibly because women are on average older when the stroke occurs. African-Americans are more likely than Caucasians to have a stroke and to die of it., there are about 27,000 reported cases of stroke each year. Nevertheless, almost 5,000 people in Mississippi will experience their first stroke this year and an excess of 1,500 will die. Strokes cost Mississippi an estimate of $150 million annually in medical expenses and $240 million in lost productivity and premature mortality (MSDH, 2012).The economic burden in caring for stroke patients are increasingly rising in health care with direct and indirect expenses in private and public health care
