Macbeth Reading Log
For my first reading log, I will being doing an analysis on Act 2 Scene 2. Before this scene, we already know that Macbeth has murdered King Duncan. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are the main characters in this certain scene. This scene is the first scene that truly unravels Macbeth’s and his wife’s characteristics. Before this scene, Macbeth came off as a very courageous and honorable soldier. However, the three witches Macbeth met in the beginning of the book played with his mind and thoughts by saying he would soon be King of Scotland. These three witches led him to wondering how he ever could become King. Lady Macbeth encourages and mocks Macbeth into killing Duncan, to get a step closer for Macbeth to becoming King. Puzzled by his ambition and emotion, Macbeth follows through with the sin. This scene shows there is change in the emotions of Macbeth and that he goes through contrast of his courageousness and guiltiness. Macbeth’s misery is exemplified in Act 2 Scene 2. In the passage she even says, “That which had made me drunk hath made me bold”(21). This shows that Lady Macbeth does not feel the slightest bit of guilt, and that she is very cruel because she does not care for the sin she has taken part in. She later on says to Macbeth, “Why did you bring these daggers from the place? They must lie there: go carry them, and smash the sleepy grooms with blood”(23). You can see that all Lady Macbeth cares about is not getting caught, but, she doesn’t show the slightest bit of guilt. She even tries to get Macbeth to go back to the crime scene and smear the groom with blood.
