What, if anything, makes this city vulnerable with regard to climate change? I think that the location and the low elevation (below sea level) of New Orleans city are the reasons that make it vulnerable. New Orleans city is near to the Gulf of Mexico and it is also on the Mississippi River. We know that one of the major causes of sea level rise is the increase in water temperature. The problems in New Orleans did not start on Aug. 29, (2005). It did not start when the levees broke. The only thing Katrina did ... was to magnify that which already existed”. (Landrieu, 2011). I think it is critical that the city changes its infrastructure and ensure that the new infrastructure is able to support different purposes. The protection system of the city needs to be changed and developed, also improve its water management to prevent future floods and I think it might be good for the city if it has a new strategy to benefit from storm water and used it a source. I believe that to increase the city’s resiliency it is important not only to change the system of the city but it is important to increase people’s awareness of the environment and climate change so everyone understands the impacts of climate change and risks, so people and businesses do their parts to protect the environment and the city.
