Individuals impacted by mental illness are at a greater risk for a substantial loss or freedom, pain, disability, and ultimately death (Stein et al., 2010). Research is being published day after day showing us the prevalence of mental illness in our society. In fact, Eisenberg, Goberstein, Whitlock, and Downs made the claim, mental illness makes up nearly half of the “estimated burden of disease” (Eisenberg et al., 2012). It is clear mental illness is a relevant concern among health professionals, and we are in a need to find the best treatment. When it comes to mental treating mental illness, we see a divide between a medical approach, which favors medication and drug therapy, and a psychosocial approach. Researchers Wyatt and Livson wanted to detect whether or not the “great divide” existed between the medical and psychosocial models of mental health treatment.
