The Supreme Court case of Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000) challenged the rights of a student who prayed over a public address system before a high school football game, which is considered student speech. The students, who represented themselves as Doe, proclaimed that they felt like religious endorsement was being brought upon the crowd. Students also stated that the prayer violated the Establishment Clause and did not represent all of the different religions at the school. The district fired back at the students saying that the pre-game invocations have been a long time tradition in Texas. The students and district could not settle this issue so it went before the Supreme Court. In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled the pre-game prayer a government religious endorsement that violated the Establishment Clause. This case has a big impact on students then and now because many times schools and students single out the most popular religion. Students who are of different religions feel like they are not important and that they are being discriminated against.
