Carbohydrates was the first chapter I read this week. In this chapter I learned about the functions of carbohydrates and the primary sources of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins provide energy for the human body but carbohydrates are the main source. Carbs are more affordable than fats and proteins. In the US, approximately half of the calories consumed by people are made up of carbohydrates. Carbs are divided into three groups: monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. I learned what elements make up proteins, the functions of proteins in the body, and the effects of protein deficiency. Proteins are the basic material of every body cell. Proteins build and repair tissue, provide energy, and regulate various body functions. Proteins are composed of chemical compounds called amino acids and are sometimes called the building blocks of proteins. The overuse of them can cause damage to kidneys and can possibly contribute to osteoporosis and cancer.
Vitamins was the fourth chapter that I read. Vitamins are organic compounds essential in small amounts for body processes. They enable the body to use the energy provided by carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Vitamins are commonly grouped according to solubility. Each vitamin has a specific function or functions within the body.
The fifth chapter I read was about minerals. Minerals are inorganic elements that are necessary for the body to build tissue, regulate body fluid and assist in Various body functions. Minerals are found in all body tissues. Minerals are found in water and in natural foods. An excessive amount of one mineral can sometimes cause a deficiency of another mineral. Excessive amounts of minerals can cause hair loss and changes in blood, hormones, bones, muscles, blood vessels, and nearly all
