Case management is a collaborative process of choosing options and developing services required to meet the health needs of individuals. It involves assessment, planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of such options with the aim of providing effective remedies. It exists in an environment that relies on it to solve or resolve problems in health care delivery systems. Proper communication and good resource management are essential factors in promoting quality and cost effective outcomes in each case. These values are pegged on the belief that case management is a means for promoting client health and wellness through communication, advocacy, education, service facilitation and identification of service resources. They require case managers to recognize the dignity, worth and rights of all individuals, and maintain a high level of commitment to quality outcomes for clients through appropriate resource use. Such efforts should be guided by the principles of beneficence, justice and autonomy (CCMC, 2009, pg. 3).
When ethical issues arise, a case manager should be well equipped to make the most ethical decision. Fisher (2012) proposed an eight-step model for ethical decision making. Hence, it is a necessity to be involved in other people’s affair in order to make sure that the task is executed accordingly. Psychology is based on understanding the parties in order to attain the right grounds for research purposes. Therefore, every undertaking is carried in a manner that ensures that the least harm is incurred by the client. This goal is only achievable if practitioners thoroughly understand and follow the ethics code. One of the most important standards outlined in this code is professional responsibility that is also regarded as competence. It defines what a case manager ought to do and to what limits such action can be taken in keeping with their professional qualifications, work experience, education, work orientation, responsibilities and obligations. In order for me to be successful in this career I must be able to abide by all of the ethical standards that I have outlined.
