E.M.: Our program believes and strives to make ethical, appropriate, and reliable assessment. We want to assess young children by using assessment methods that are developmentally appropriate. Our primary focus is to observe young children in a manner that is realistic.

E.M.: We use checklists, and observational procedures. Also our teachers build a relationship with parents so they can share what they observe at home. E.M.: Yes, I think the information that is gathered through the assessments that are conducted assist teacher to identify the needs of the children. We value such information because it assists the teachers to plan activities that are guided based on their needs. We want to make sure we are meeting the needs of the children. Teachers are able to plan activities that are going to support their learning. Our program wants to help children reach their goals and we believe that by using this assessment tool we are able to accomplish this.

Each day they focus on a specific domain that they will observe. Doing this daily enables teacher to accurately evaluate and assess the learning that is taking place in their classroom. The teachers, teacher’s assistance, and parent volunteers conduct observations. At the end of the week they share the information that is gathered to ensure that they are accurately assessing young children. Also they ask parents to provide them information that they are observing in the home. Using at least one formative assessment daily enables you to evaluate and assess the quality of the learning that is taking place in your classroom. Based on that information the teacher select the developmental level the child has mastered three times a year in the DRDP. I think that it is important that throughout the year they are conducting observations because it allows them to see the progress that children are making.
