One of the most influential authors of the 19th century was Nathanial Hawthorn, who displayed many things though his works. Most being prominent political, economic, and cultural issues surrounding his community, as well as the nation at that time. One of the most important themes in his most popular writings was the relationship between individualism, and responsibility to community. In both “My Kinsman, Major Molineux”, and The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne expresses his views on the issue and attempts to influence his, and later generations to ponder said relationship. The novel follows a puritan communities’ banishment of a woman who has committed adultery. As Hawthorne states, “People say,' said another, 'that the Reverend Master Dimmesdale, her godly pastor, takes it very grievously to his heart that such a scandal has come upon his congregation(Hawthorne)." The first of these actions was The Indian Removal Act, which forced Native American’s out of their homeland and to travel to the west. The second of which was the beginning of the spoils system, which meant that most government officials would be replaced every time the party in power change, no matter how qualified they were. Jackson’s American dream, no matter what he wrote about it, was one that was deeply set in the advancement of the rich white male, forcing Native Americans out of their land to further the economic advancement of those who claimed it. And removing qualified government officials from their positions to provide jobs for his friends. In 2016 not much has changed, Jackson’s American Dream is still extremely prominent, the spoils system is still in place, leaving some qualified workers out of jobs every four years. In addition, there is a continued infringement on what small land Native Americans have, in places like North
