This meritocracy was portrayed from reality conflict. This ideology is what people fear the most because it didn’t end with a happy ending, or hard works pays off. In this reality story, Melanie, who is a hard working student from a very low-income family. Melanie attends a public school near her home that is severely under-budgeted. Melanie’s only chance at attending college is being awarded a full scholarship. Melanie works extremely hard in school, but ends up not getting the scholarship she needed. Unfortunately, life is not fair sometimes. The biggest issue is in the real world is that “If branded at school they are more vulnerable for later unemployment” (“Down with Meritocracy”, 2001). This relates to 3 Miles because since Melanie didn’t get the scholarship, she was branded as not being successful. She took the defeat, which causes her motivation to slip. Her initial dream failed, and she just gave up instead of looking for other ways to achieve her goals. This morals fears everyone from pursuing their dream with fear of not succeeding. When I was a senior in high school in the second semester, 2 months from my last high school soccer season, I had no scholarship to any schools, or grades to get into a 4 year school. So I made my decision to enlist to Marine Corps. Yet I had to pass the asvab test and physical test. Physically I was the best recruiter, but I failed the asvab test. Now I was out of options becoming, but yet I was still training and skipping classes to go study at the library. My hard work started to translate to the field, last thing I know I had offers coming in but with my grades and act scores I couldn’t get accepted to universities. But like I mentioned hard work will always come to light, I had an offer from a community college in Iowa witch they provided dorms, because I couldn’t afford to live off
