Some people say that society doesn’t have an influence over how they dress or act. When you take a step back, you realize that society has actually taken away the idea of being who we truly are. They have advertised how to be the ‘perfect person’, but it doesn’t have to be like that. According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “ to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Emerson wanted people to know that is okay to be yourself, to stick out in the crowd. People are easily persuaded when it comes to celebrities or someone who is adored by many, but it doesn’t have to be like that. Self-esteem is having confidence in one’s own worth, to respect yourself. While self-image is defined as the idea one has of one’s abilities, looks and character. Respecting one’s self requires us to love who we are or where before society got a hold of us. Every year the age where everything changes are decreasing. Seventh graders are introduced to things that high school should be being introduced to. One by one we can change the stereotypes society has created for the world. The Jock gets to be with the Head Cheerleader, the nerds are the outcasts, the drama kids are inexistent. Let’s create a new society where it is okay to be different and to not be judged because you don’t understand everything. Brands are placed on things we don’t understand, on the things that aren’t you. Only together can we truly change how everything is viewed, how we are viewed. Oblivion is becoming the new normal. We are unaware of what is happening, being unable to see the bigger picture. Each one of us is just a small piece in what is actually happening and what we do with our abilities may not make the biggest impact, but sometimes that’s just enough.
