The Place at the Table event focused on the NFL Boycott and discussed the power of Colin Kaepernick’s campaign, in aspects ranging from his effectiveness, and the purpose of his message. Stemming from an outrage to police brutality and a desire to create a voice for the voiceless, Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the National Anthem at his NFL games. Although it has cost him his career, Mr. Kaepernick continues to spread awareness and donate money to community projects that work to provide a voice to the silenced. After moving to a small, rural community in Pennsylvania from Philadelphia, I was shocked to see the limited amount of 12 step recovery meetings in this area. Since moving here, I have already run into several of my drug and alcohol clients at AA meetings, and the ethical issue of boundaries has needed to be dealt with. Scott (2000) stated, “many addictions counselors are also in recovery and attend 12-step programs in the community. Thus, they often find themselves in a dual role with clients, acting as a therapist in treatment and a peer in groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous,” (p. 213). Due to the fact that I am recovering myself, and need these meetings to maintain my own sobriety, being knowledgeable about the ethical guidelines regarding dual…

Suarez, Newman, and Reed (2008) have defined positionality as “our internal and external status’ as being along two axes and how they interact or intersect defines our position and power in society and our practice with clients.” Their article goes on to look at how Suarez one of the co-authors viewed and deconstructed her positionality about that of her client’s. She reflected on her positionality in this way so that she would not make false assumptions about her clients by viewing them with her biased about their culture as compared to hers. My positionality can affect Mr. E as well because I am a member of the dominant culture as a white person and he is a member of a minority culture and ethnicity as an African American individual.…
