What factors affects nursing retention in the acute care setting?
The aim of this essay is to assess critically a research paper among few quantitative and qualitative research documents provided. The research document was intended to get a better insight of what factors affect nursing retention in the acute care setting. The sample size was large and for that reason intends for better outcome. Though using power calculation would have facilitated the researcher to gain an approximate sample size needed to recognize some significant difference among the variables. The sample was sufficiently chosen to get representativeness as the researcher chose nurses in different care settings while their main focus was in acute settings. By Choosing a smaller sample affects the results to be excessively representative in the target population. By using different data analyses, allowing the researcher to gain considerable and precise scientific results. The results from the data demonstrated that professional stress and moral distress are predictive factors influencing nurses ' intention to stay in the organisation. but the Professional stress factors were not frequent occurrence compared to the moral distress factors. The findings from the discriminant analyses and the multiple regression analyses, showed a strong correlation between moral distress and nurses intention to stay. Besides the response acquired from the nurse’s open-ended questions showed that nurses did have few memory or experience about moral distress even after leaving the settings a while ago. In regard to these responses, one could argue that these nurses did not get a lot of support or help within the organisation and as a result it is an ongoing situation.
This put forward that moral distress strongly activates the emotions of nurses compare with the Professional stress issues. In their answers, 22 nurses expressed moral distress factors as not telling the truth about patients’ health condition to patient or their family, ignoring patient 's wishes, not enough help for the patient when needed and taking unnecessary actions for patients. It can be argued that these dilemmas can generate emotional response and increase ethical issues within the institution and the
