According to López-Pérez, Ambrona, Gregory, Stocks, & Oceja, 2013 building a relationship with a service user is key in order for them to develop a trusting and collaborative relationship. When providing care to children it is not only the child you need to build a relationship with but also their parents. As a professional a relation needs to be developed in order for them as a family to develop trust when caring for their child. The professionals need to also develop a therapeutic relationship with the child. Roberts, Fenton, & Barnard 2015 state that a fundamental principle of nursing is building a therapeutic relationship. The effects of this type of relationship may have positive and or negative effects on the care that is being provided. A therapeutic relationships nature can affect the professional ability to provide high standards of care which supports both a child and their family. According to Hough 2010, a relationship between a professional, child and family is arguably more important than communication skills. A therapeutic relationship can often take time to develop and sometimes this can be difficult within a hospital setting. As stated above it is essential that all family members are looked after as well as the sick child. Failure to do so can negatively impact on the care that is being given to that family. Hospitalisation on a child and family can be very frightening; therefore it is key that the health care professionals ensure they support both parents and the child. Building a professional relationship is also a key aspect of nursing, without this can leave a family anxious. If a relationship is built with the nurse and other healthcare professionals it allows the family to build a trusting relationship allowing the family to feel positive about the care that is being given.
