Food deserts are becoming an increasingly controversial social issue among Americans because it puts certain people at an unfair disadvantage. For example, lower class citizens are not offered easy accessible healthy food as opposed to their wealthier suburban counterparts. Urban dwellers are then forced to buy cheaper and unhealthier foods to feed their youth causing kids a number of issues such as focusing problems, childhood obesity, and lower test scores. This puts inner-city kids significantly behind those who grow up in wealthier homes that are able to afford more substantial food therefore affecting how they turn out later on in life. Although this people can be found living in both rural and urban areas it is more likely to see this problem in the inner city. People living in these areas are prone to have poorer eating habits than the rest of the population. Further research on the social geography of food deserts has shown that the people living in them are more challenged to get proper nutrition. Also this research has shown that economic status and race are big variables that play on how accessible food is in certain areas (Del Casino). Studies have shown that poor nutrition in growing kids can result in delayed cognitive development, childhood obesity, and lack of social skills (Frnak). It is also shown that children who have an increased consumption of processed foods will develop lower IQ scores later on in life (Frnak). Because people living in food deserts are not able to get to the grocery market they are forced to buy food usually from the neighborhood gas station or corner store. The food offered here is most likely to be unhealthy junk food. Moreover, when they are able to find fruits and vegetable at these corner stores they are usually either expired or of the lowest
