More than a third of Americans are overweight, and heart disease kills more than 610,000 people a year, according the Center for Disease Control. Much of this can be attributed to more sedentary lifestyles; Americans do a lot more sitting than exercise. However, much of this is caused by poor diets filled with meat, fat, and cholesterol. Eating a well-balanced vegetarian diet can lower one 's risks of chronic and possibly fatal diseases.

As the rates of cancer skyrocket across the nation and scientists search for the reason why, more and more studies begin to link diets high in red meat to these outcomes. While the overall consensus if red meat affects one’s risk of cancer is unsure, the correlation is getting stronger all the time. In fact, the growing list of cancers eating red meat may increase one’s risk of include prostate, lung, breast, kidney, esophagus, lung, liver, and pancreatic (Palmer 13). The highest risk of cancer linked to eating meat is colorectal, otherwise known as colon cancer. The risk of colorectal cancer is 88 percent higher in meat eaters versus non meat eaters (Jacobson 24). This is largely in part to a diet high in fat and low in fiber. Eating a balanced vegetarian diet rich in the natural fiber from fruits and vegetables can help with colon problems and reduce the risk of colon cancer.
