“Winning is not a sometime thing, it is an all the time thing. You don’t do things right once in a while… you do them right all the time,” (Lombardi 2010). Vince Lombardi said this to his players while getting ready for the 1970 NFC Championship game. Like winning, football is an all the time thing that happens year round, whether one is training as an athlete for the regular season or is a spectator of the game, football is a major part of our society. Football done right is a major business, a source of entertainment, and a form of recreation. It is also a way of creating community, supporting a certain team is a common denominator for many. In the IFL they have a different field setup then the National Football League (NFL). The IFL uses a field that is 50 yards long and 28 yards wide, which is half the size of the NFL field. The field goal posts are 10 feet wide, 20 feet tall, and are hung from the ceiling 10 feet off the ground. The IFL also is only allotted to have 21 dressed players on the bench, four players who are on practice squad, and five reserve players on the roster for the team. Each team is able to have one coach on the field at a time, which is usually the offensive and defensive coordinators switching with the players. The teams are only allowed to have eight players each on the field at once, three of the defensive players must act as linemen and four of the offensive players must play on the line of scrimmage. Also, the offense can only have two players move in a forward motion. In the IFL there is no punting whatsoever, either the team goes for the touchdown on fourth down or kick a field goal. They may be players wanting to make a break into the NFL or players who were already excluded from the NFL. In either case they have a strong desire and ambition to play. The amount of monetary compensation and recognition they receive is in no comparison with what the NFL players receive. The salary for the IFL players consist of $250 per game for all of those who dress while the practice squad receives $200 per game. Every player though does receive the benefit of the team paying for housing and $25 for every time a player makes an appearance at a charity event for the community. The problem is that with the 17 week season an active player who attends charity events makes roughly $18,000 per season. This creates a huge challenge for the players as this is obviously not enough income for the players to consider this their sole means of support so they must maintain other employment as well. The training, practice, game schedule and calendar of community events they must attend then puts a strain on their other place of
