Rape: A Serious Issue
Rape is a serious social and public issue in the United States. Women are usually the victims of rape, while men are usually the offenders. The majority of women are sexually assaulted by men who they are familiar with. Women are far less likely to report a rape if they know the person who assaulted them. For this reason, the number of sexual assaults are significantly under reported. In this paper, you will see how in both, Amy Schumer’s “Football Town Nights” and The Onion: College Basketball Star Overcomes Rape try to educate the public about rape by the use of comedy.
Amy Schumer targets rape in "Football Town Nights." This is a courageous sketch from the comedian's Comedy Central Series Inside Amy Schumer. A knockoff of Friday Night Lights, the sketch “Football Town Night” focuses on a high school football coach who puts a "no raping" policy into place on his team. Following the template of a Friday Night Lights episode, the team riots. They reunite after an inspirational and ironic locker room pep talk. Schumer plays the Coach's wife; Tami Taylor whose wine glass grows larger throughout the sketch. The wine glass is used for comic relief.

When describing the rape in this comedic sketch, it infers that is was his biggest achievement. When talking about the “achievement,” Jacob Ross said, “It was just something that happened you know? I’m not just going to sit around and wish that it didn’t” (Score, By Next). He played the night after the rape and scored a career high of thirty-seven points like nothing happened. Later in the sketch, Jacob stated, “I was brought here to go to class and play basketball, so that’s what I’m going to do. It’s not about who I raped” (Score, By Next).
