1. Foreshadowing in literature is hint given by a writer as to what will happen during the end of the story. In the Tell-Tale Heart Poe’s first person character gives this hint in the second paragraph: “He had the eye of a vulture………..I have made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” Later on during the end of the story he kills the old man.
2. In the story, The Cask of Amontillado, the plot of the story is that Montresor believes that he has been insulted and disgraced by Fortunato, so he decides to take revenge from him. The three policemen are flat characters in the story, The Tell-Tale Heart because they have one simple and evident role to do investigation and nothing else, hence are called flat characters. Round Characters on other hand are multitask and take different positions and play major and unpredictable role in the story, which is played by the narrator/murderer. 4. (a) First-person narrator uses pronoun “I” to convey the story, in The Tell-Tale Hart the narrator is a major narrator, who is omniscient and knows everything in the story. (b) Third-person narrator uses “he or she” and has no role in the story. Objective narrator is an observer, who describes, feeling, thoughts and motivation of the characters. Limited omniscient has limited knowledge of the events.
5. The main idea, topic and point of story is called its theme. The theme of “The Tell-Tale Heart” is the killing of the old man by the narrator who has a confused personality. There seems to be no obvious motive behind the killing except that he can’t stand the old man vulture eye.
6. Setting is defined in literature as to identify and establish the time, place and mood of the events of the story. Setting helps us in knowing as to when, where, why and for what reason the story is taking
