Infectious diseases are spread through four methods of transmission they are
1. Respiratory tract transmission
2. Fecal-Oral transmission
3. Direct contact transmission
4. Blood contact transmission
Respiratory tract
Infectious diseases are transmitted via the respiratory tract and they can range from a mild cold to many life threatening diseases. This is the most common method of transmission of infectious diseases in an early childhood environment.
Germs pass through the air from the respiratory tract of the infected person to another person when they breathe the infected air.

Two Common spread diseases
Disease: Cold – respiratory tract transmission
Spread through droplet spread, mouthed toys, blowing nose etc.
Signs/Symptoms: Sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, watery eyes, sore throat, fever. Most contagious 2to 3 days before and 3 to 5 days after symptoms appear.
Teachers’ role: Wipe runny noses always use gloves, wash hands often, do not share food, drink, disinfect mouthed toys, teach children to cover mouth when sneezing or coughing, throw away used tissues in a covered trash can etc.
Disease: Whooping cough – serious respiratory infection caused by pertussis bacteria that causes violent coughing. This is a Life threatening and highly contagious disease for younger kids.
Spread through air and fluids by sneezing, coughing and droplet spread and when children are less immune they can be easily exposed.
Signs/symptoms: contagious from the beginning and for 2 weeks after coughing starts. Coughing spells with whoop sounds, vomiting and runny
