Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is an organization that I wanted to be a part of. When I first had an encounter with the women of this organization I saw how nice they all were, and I mean genuinely nice. That in itself showed me that the women in the organization are people that I could see myself being around for the rest of my life. They exemplified the kind of sisterhood that I would want to be affiliated with.…

With the problems of drug abuse and academic integrity in collegiate athletics in the 1980s, something needed to be done to address these issues. The problem was that these issues were hidden and ignored by American society. The death of Len Bias exposed these issues. In this essay I will investigate the extent to which the death of Len Bias affected the problems of drug abuse and the lack of academic integrity in college athletics. This extended essay demonstrates that the death of Len Bias revealed two systemic problems: drug abuse and the lack of academic integrity in college athletics.…
My interest for potentially becoming a part of the Psi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is based on the personal and professional development of its members and the social change that results in equality. I view Psi Theta Omega Chapter as a huge advocate for the metropolitan Orlando area when it comes to the community service and its involvement of its educational growth of its young ladies. These are a major focus that has sparked my interest in understanding what this Sorority does as a whole. I have always been an individual that loves serving the community being that I can make a change within someone’s life by helping them grow mentally and physically.…
Zarco and Shoemaker (1995) give a couple explanations of why this violence, particularly in fraternities, continues to occur. The first thought is the idea of legacy. “Perhaps members of the fraternities have relatives, including fathers, who were members of the fraternity, and learned of the violence, and perhaps the animosities, among certain groups on campus from these relatives” (Zarco & Shoemaker, 1995, pp. 76-77).…
Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

Growing up, many of us have obtained some knowledge on greek-letter organizations somehow. Whether we have all seen movies about colleges that are fraternity and sorority based or through social media. They’ve given us a little insight on the college life and if you’re like me, these moves have gotten you inspired and excited for college. They’ve shown us the crazy parties, the popularity, the step battles, and the harsh hazing as well. Even though we see an abundance of what goes on in these organizations, these movies do not give us a full understanding of greek letter organizations.…

My desire to become an Alpha Man has been driven by my life experiences and encounters with many of my past educators that are Alpha Men. I grew up in disadvantaged neighborhood beset with drugs, gangs, and many life challenges. However, I was able to overcome those challenges and graduate from high school in the top 1% percent of my class. My success was influenced by many men that are members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.…
When you join a sorority, you join a cult. As I sit here writing this in the house of the sorority I belong to, I feel as if I will be doing them an injustice by unveiling them in a negative light throughout this essay. Ancient sacrificial humans were not showered in monogrammed water bottles and bundles of candy when they were initiated into a group, but the process to become a so called “sorority girl” proved to show striking parallels with that of the age-old process to attach oneself to a religious cult even before Christ. Sure, sororities engage in mind-altering practices. Yes, they request unquestioning commitment to their leader.…
I should be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. Everyday I show the five pillars; scholarship, citizenship, character, leadership, and service. Here are a few of the many reasons of how the five pillars fit into my life and make me who I am. I love the challenge of going to school making scholarship my best quality. Every marking period I get on High Honor Roll, as an outcome of my work ethic.…
Greek life on campus is an aspect of upper education that is publicized often, many proclaiming the social and educational benefits of living with your peers, but has a significant amount of negative stigma attached to it. Although the tales told of fraternities and sororities are sometimes exaggerated, there are many more cases where Greek life organizations have garnered copious amounts of attention for controversial behavior. In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…
In terms of internal reforms, the NCAA now allows universities to offer unlimited meals and snacks to their athletes, and also provide additional benefits to scholarship athletes (Sanderson & Siegfried, 2015, p. 133). There have also been proposals to allow multiyear scholarships, and to also support athletes who want to further their education after their eligibility expires (Sanderson & Siegfried, 2015, p. 133). Regarding lawsuits, the authors discuss the O’Bannon v. NCAA case, the collective bargaining case by Northwestern University athletes, and the collection of similar cases that seek to attack the ceiling on grant-in-aid (Sanderson & Siegfried, 2015, p. 134). To conclude the article, Sanderson and Siegfried express their expectation regarding what will happen to collegiate athletics. They state that they expect an evolution in the labor market that will reduce, and even potentially eliminate the monopsony power of the NCAA, collegiate sports teams, and conferences (Sanderson & Siegfried, 2015,…
Joining a fraternity on campus is something that many college freshmen look forward to, and it should be a time of comradery and fun. Unfortunately, the hazing process can be something that turns from fun to dangerous quickly, and if your young adult couldn’t get out they may not be suffering. Has your young adult returned home from college because they were the victim of fraternity hazing that went too far, or now their grades and mental and physical health are suffering because of the pledging process? Where they hospitalized because of substance abuse or other types of abuse, and you want to get justice for the actions that are negatively affecting your young adult’s life?…
