Throughout history and even today, America is defining what it means to be free and who those freedoms apply to. America is the Americans, no matter their origin, who experience freedom or fight in order to gain this experience.
The first settlers who came to America came in search of opportunity. For some, it was the opportunity to earn financial success, but others came in search of freedom from England’s rule. One of the main reasons settlers traveled to America was to escape religious persecution. In England, the Catholic church was persecuting Puritans. The new colonies offered Puritans and other religions the opportunity and freedom to practice and expand their religions. England controlled America’s government, taxes, military, and essentially all roles in American life. However, since England was so far away, their rule of America and its settlers did not create a life that the settlers enjoyed. Even though the settlers traveled to a new land, they were still being controlled by the king. To ensure that settlers were able to live successful lives and have opportunities to improve their future, the settlers revolted against England. This fight for independence resulted in the Revolutionary War. Over 25,000 settlers died as a result of this war. However, by winning the war America was an independent country.
