Hard determinism is the idea that every event that happens is because another event brought it about. Stating that every action is happening because something else happened before it. This also supports the idea that human freedom is in fact just an illusion. That the choices we make are not because we choose to make them rather that we make them because we are influenced to. Furthermore, compatibilism is the view that every human event that happens is caused, caused by surrounding influences. This also supports the suggestion that all humanly choices made within one’s self are still considered “free”. Lastly, Indeterminism and libertarianism are the final free will position. Human people are controlled by the inner self, or by the people in power above them. “Just as your alarm clock lacks the possibility to choose freely whether it will sound, you lack the power to choose freely, because everything you think, feel, and do is caused by factors that are beyond your control” (Chaffee 2016) Just as the alarm clock us humans are restrained by what we are allowed to do without facing some form of consequence. Human freedom is not essentially free, and no one is entitled to make their own decisions without consequences. It is hard to get the elephant and the rider to move together along the same path, not only because the elephant is a strong powering animal but because the rider and the
