Over the past two decades, exhaust emissions have fallen more than 95 percent. Roughly two-thirds of all domestic freight is carried by a truck. All of that freight requires the use of nearly 13% of the country’s total fuel consumption. Even with dramatically lower oil costs than previous years the need for cleaner, cheaper engines will become almost glaring to companies that fail to innovate.
Automation is also a very possible advancement in the near future. While companies are just starting to utilize the technology it will take years to build large fleets. One alternative is outfitting a tractor trailer with autonomous technology- which is being offered as cheap as $30,000 whereas, a driver’s average salary is $40,000. It is to be expected that sometime soon our interstates will see an increase in driverless big rigs.
The advancements that are foreseeable in the near future are automation of tractor trailers or big advancements within the technology to help improve the overarching supply chain. The result could be something similar to the automation of the auto industry’s manufacturing plants with the workers, some with no other skills, behind to fend for themselves in small
