In respect to advertising, their primary task is to correctly convey what the client(s) requests, which will bring them the most customers and profit, while maintaining a good brand image for said client. Art directors are the people who choose where the “free” in all caps goes on the coupon slip at the grocery store or the way that the letters for the “BOGO” sale are arranged. The art director position does not necessarily require an art background because it usually is done with the assistance of a graphic designer or photographer, but It is encouraged to have some familiarity with the art process.
