The gross income of Gangxia village joint-stock company (VJSC) in 2003 was 14.88 million RMB, 96% of which was from property leasing (FURO, 2005). Collecting rent was the indigenous villagers’ main source of income. As interviewee VG1 claimed, for instance, before the redevelopment of Gangxia, his five-storey housing can make 60,000-70,000 RMB rent for him every month.
Nevertheless, distinct from other urban villages, Gangxia holds a profound history in the district for the reason that all villagers own the same family name of “Wen”. Each one in the village regard himself as the descendants of Wen Tianxiang (in the South Song dynasty, about 700 years ago), one of the most-respected politicians all cross the country. The tribe is then distributed into the overseas Wens and the local Wens (Retumu, 2015). Such internal distribution acted as a very essential role in the event afterwards which leads to the degradation of the
