Gattaca: The Message of the Future After watching the movie Gattaca, it brought to reasoning that there were different ways of selection in every living organism. Gattaca is about a guy, Vincent Freeman, who is born and they detect that disorders will occur in his 30 years of living. His younger brother, Anton Freeman, is given the “good” genes by a process called artificial selection. Artificial selection is a process done by man, where they close the mating process and the traits that go along with it are chosen. Natural selection is the inheritance by chance, where organisms earn traits that will benefit them and their environment. Both are opposite in letting something happen and changing/keeping …show more content…
For example, having long legs may run recessive in your family, but with artificial selection, you can increase the chances of long legs at birth. This type of method may decrease chance of survival; it won’t always be for the better. If a science were to decide to make a snow monkey have very little hair, or even not at all, their chances of survival throughout winter is low. Or maybe even a human wanting their child to be born with a flatter face due to likes in physical appearance, it might appeal to them, but the chances of being born with breathing problems could also occur. Benefits of natural selection are the increase in variety throughout the environment. If you let organisms go by natural selection, then they won’t have the benefit of the doubt of not being able to survive due to a gene fix. Some cons may be the slow process of …show more content…
Gene therapy is an example of what Anton, and the rest of the valid’s did. Gene therapy is where genes that cause any type of disease or infection are replaced with the “normal genes” to prevent any harm to happen in the future. Pretty much artificial selection, where they get to chose what does and doesn’t happen in their body. This results in the whole eugenics stage, where their goal is to control the environment as a whole, like in Gattaca, by labeling the people apart, and trying to change how the society works. One should draw the line between gene therapy and eugenics when they see that people start to misuse this for their child’s benefit. Eugenics and gene therapy should only be used if any type of disease is detected before the birth, so chances cancel out. But one should not use it for the sake of perfecting an organism. Humans should simply let nature take its way, and let the environment adapt on its own. With Gattaca taking a turn, there is n incident where a worker is murdered, an in the crime scene, they find and eyelash. That eyelash was the one of Vincent’s but he learns to keep safe under the identity of Jerome. When Vincent does a search to find out who the detective is that is searching for him, he learns it’s his long lost brother, Anton. After a long conversation, they play their childhood game and result in Vincent saving his
