Gender roles is one of those rare topics that most individuals can agree on. It is basically defined as “the behaviors, attitudes, and personality traits that are designated as either masculine or feminine in a given culture.” It occurs in the media, in sports, and even in everyday life. Gender roles go hand in hand with stereotypes; women …show more content…
Many celebrities and politicians have come outin support of it and members of the community have learned to feel more comfortable in their own skin. Society for the most part still thinks of gender as a binary thing;either you are male or female. An individual’s gender is a complex relationship between three distinct things:Body- what a person feels about their body and how others treat him/her/other. Many people who oppose the transgender community do not realize that there are naturally occurring “non-binary” conditions that prove male and female genders are not theonly two that exist.Identity- what does an individual feel like internally? Its whats on the inside that counts, basically. Genders, like colors, have a spectrum; one can identify as a male, female, both, or neither one. No amount of emotions ormade up statistics will ever change that. Anyone who thinks someone with XY chromosomes can change them to XX chromosomes is either mentally and emotionally disturbed, or they are just trying to get attention. You cannot change DNA, and just because one “feels” something does not make it so. I may feel like a dog; I could wear a collar, walk on all fours, and bark but that does not change thefact that I am a human woman. In all seriousness there is an actual psychological term for this mental illness. Gender Dysphoria is characterized as “a conflict between physical or assigned gender and thegender with which he/she identify.” It is a mental illness, and should be treated as such. The fact that the media celebrated Bruce Jenner’s fairly recent announcement that he would “transition” to a female as heroic repulses me. Because I thought heroism was bravery in the face of adversity, and there is nothing brave about whatMr. Jenner did. That being said I do agree with what I said about men and women being inherently different. Because we are. My brothers will never be able to give birth to children andI will never be able to play football in the NFL. My closing argument is at what point do we stop allowing people to do perverted things simply because of what they “feel”? Should we allow rape to be legal because rapists feel good when they committhat horrible act? Because with that logic used to
