The Society believes that man need to be powerful and the head of the household. For many women seeing men powerful is what makes men masculine and strong. In the article, ““Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt ”: Advertising and Violence” Jean Kilbourne explains the importance of relationships between women and men, but unfortunately the society prefers men that are hostile and indifferent, “Indeed the very worst kind of man for a woman to be in an intimate relationship with, often a truly dangerous man, is the one considered most sexy and desirable in the popular culture”(424). Expectations that men should be strong, masculine, and more powerful than women can easily trigger violent behaviors in men due to the impression that they are appearing weak or unmanly. Relationships like these end up ruining women, making them weak and vulnerable. “According to a 1998 study by the federal government, one in five of us has been the victim of rape or attempted rape… In fact, three of four women in study who responded that they had been raped or assaulted as adults said the perpetrator was a current or former husband, a cohabiting partner or a date” (433). Advertisements and music such as Hip-hop music videos are known to have significant effects on today’s society. There seems to be a serious representation of men and women in hip-hop music videos. Because of masculinity, women in hip-hop music videos are usually portrayed as sex objects that only exist for men’s pleasure. In the music video by YG ft. Tyga, “Bitches Aint Shit,” shows the misogyny representation throughout the entire song. We can clearly see from the title that the song shows no respect for women, but rather downgrades women and portrays them as objects. Hip Hop songs doesn’t just affect relationships between men and women but also men and men. In another song by Lil Wayne Ft. Eminem, “Drop the World,” there is so much hatred and aggression. First of all the song starts with “I got ice in my veins, blood in my eyes, Hate in my heart, love in my mind,” from the first verse we can already tell that he is going through a lot of pain, then he says “ I search but never find, hurt but never cry,” going back to Kimmels article, the first and second rule that men need to follow are, “Men don’t cry” and “Its Better to be Mad than Sad”(462).
